Hi Courtenay, I am taking Janisse's summer memoir class with you, which is how I found your substack, and I'm happy to have found it and read this piece! In the mid-80's, my family moved from the Pacific North West to Southeast Georgia, about as far as you can draw a diagonal line on a map of the US, from upper left tip to lower right tip... and from left to right idealogically too. Over the years the political divide has worsened, especially in the last decade, but my very liberal family has continued to be loved and accepted in a very red area. It's hard to reconcile how such kind and loving people could support policies and people I find so cruel and inhumane. And I think social media has made everything worse, because everyone is in their own funnel and it's much easier to demonize and stoke fear in the other when we only engage online. So I'm encouraged to read this essay and learn of this organization and this important work you are doing! Thank you for sharing and for helpnig bring people back together! 💙
